The Foreign Altruism

One of my friends happened to travel down south, and was quite astonished by what he saw. It's not something new to see that people from all over the world joining hands to build a nation that's badly in need of help. But imagine foreigners, who have no obligation over the predicament of an alien nation, coming forward and working their guts out with tractors, shovels, bricks, cement etc while there's not a single local to be seen on sight! Now that is a disaster!

Many survivors have repeatedly accused the government not only for their inefficiency but also for not supplying aid to all corners. Who knows every inch of the country? Is it the ones who rule it or the ones who arrived just a week ago? It doesn't come as a surprise that the officials are 'still planning' on how to go ahead with the recovery effort. Yesterday, one of them in television said "We are considering changing their meal plan of Rice and Dhal to something else". God knows what that might be!

The government proudly and happily accepts all the aid they receive. But which fraction of that do we really get. None of us have received a cent from them but they claim their rebuilding the nation.

It's the private organizations and donors who are out there doing the little that they can, and the voluntary foreign aid groups are the ones that have apparently done the largest amount of relief work around here. So what's happening to our guys? Probably sitting on AC rooms with cushioned seats estimating how much their plan would cost! By the time they execute their plan, the displaced would have got fed up of life and committed suicide and their death certificates would read "Post Tsunami Stress".

So as history is written with visitors building our nation while the owners having their go at the bounties of a post-tsunami period, It would be fascinating to see the heads claming the newly built Sri Lanka as their own in the heat of the next election. Damn! Why am I being so political? Like I ever had a choice. I doubt we would ever see the frogs going to sleep once again without making a noise that reminds us of these days.
