Post Traumatic Stress

We have certainly heard about those who died, those who were injured and those who are missing. But among the victims there are many who have been affected mentally after the horrific scenes they had witnessed during the tsunami attack.

Days after their hard fought survival, most needed to be treated for their physical injuries. But now there's a much harder task for the doctors to face. They have to treat the same patients once again for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A task that cannot be undertaken by the same medical staff who are already having their part of stress.

Some banged their heads against the hospital wall. Some, wide-eyed, just stared vacantly, while others mumbled 'the sea is coming,' reliving the horrors of the massive tsunami that took with it their families and homes.

Doctors worry this debilitating condition will take away many of those who survived after living through some of the disheartening moments in their lives. As the psychiatric ward fills up with more patients, the task to cure them becomes much harder than one could imagine. It's as if their entering the hall of doom. Patients suffering from PTSD who not taking treatment could be detrimental to themselves and to those who are around them. Therefore any of the victims with symptoms including aggressiveness, slurred and incoherent speech, anxiety and suicidal tendencies should get immediate treatment.

Treating these patients is just one of the issues. But in order to overcome the situation, doctors are requesting the support from patients remaining family members, who are the best ones to show affection to these unfortunate victims. They have also appealed all religious institutions to offer counselling in order to help the healing process. Why oh why do these innocent lives, have to bury themselves without dying?
