Landing on an Opteron
I still haven't given reasons for the recent downtime that was caused by the server move. Everything went as planned, except that a php recompilation ended up in failure, causing an unexpected halt of service.

However, now ceneus is firmly stabilized on a dual opteron 242 model with some strong system components that's classified by the techs to be way better than the earlier 4-way Xeon at the Planet. The AMD Opteron processor represents the landmark introduction of the AMD64 architecture enabling simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing.
It's basically designed to run existing 32-bit applications with outstanding performance and a simplified migration path to 64-bit computing. This will be the first time I’ll be running on one, so let me see whether it can really break the boundaries of my previous Xeon.
From the specification: clock speed 1.6GHz, Socket 940, 2-way scalability, x86-64, Simultaneous 32- and b4-bit computing, Integrated Dual DDR333 memory interface, ECC 1MB L2 & 128k L1 cache, 19.2GB peak bandwidth and 0.13 micron "Silicon on insulator" technology.
The relocation from Dallas to San Jose also changed the bandwidth provider from Qwest to InterNAP. I'm not sure whether this was a good move, but the datacenter wanted more network flexibility and promised more optimized bandwidth. Both service providers are very reliable, but i'm new to InterNAP. So as long as the digits spread fairly towards Europe and Asia, i'll be happy with it. Razorshack is on the verge of scaling the ladder of server technology. But its appropriateness is still under question in the owner's court.
I'm hoping to write some web apps to test the new server. So my dear peers don't be surprised to see me in ur mailbox!

leaving the technical part, everything else is great! :) I was wondering when it would be done, after that message remained for about 4 hours or so. how come you never mentioned about the new layout. it looks awesome! great work pal!
Sounds great! I have heard some good things about opteron. Nice you got it through in a short while.
What happen yesterday?
The datacenter suffered a critical outage on it's core switch to Internap which caused significant packet loss. Just as I feared they took a considerable amount of time to resolve the issue. That's for being the new kid on the block.
They will be replacing the current core switch with an upgraded model that features redundant power supplies & feeds. The datacenter will also be adding a private line connection in case of a future emergency.
Didn't I say I felt bad abount switching bandwidth providers? At least I know it wasn't the opteron! ;)
