Altering the SL Map

There were many talks about whether the authorities were planing on altering the Sri Lankan map following the tsunami disaster that engulfed many coastal areas of the island. Most locals were even baffled with the idea of having a new map.

At first, cartographers feared the situation might lead to an alteration of the map as they expected the island's coastline to have changed nearly three quarters of its shores. It didn't come as a surprise, as in some places waves had reported to reach around 150 metres inland destroying everything on its way.

However, the Surveyor-General made it clear that no aleration is necessary as satellite pictures taken before and after the tsunami shows no major difference to the geography. An alteration could be made only if there is a geographic difference of more than 5 metres. But after investigation it was revealed that most parts had a change of less that 3 metres. So most likely we will be using the same map for a long time, unless someone comes up with evidence of a large scale geographical change like in Sumatra where small islands have moved 20 metres south west due to the tsunami.
