A Counting Problem

A little bit of CS would indicate that it's virtually impossible to precisely count the number of dead bodies in a such a widespread disaster. Unfortunately the ones who were never included in the initial count and still MiC would have sacrificed their remains to anything from waste lands to underwater creatures.

Still, someone has to take up the job of doing what's possible. But it appears that two different groups have got their numbers mixed up during the process. Until now we, at least I, have followed the count of the NDMC (National Disaster Management Centre) which gave some heavy blows to many hearts. However, now comes the news from the PSM (Public Security Ministry) that the count is over 7,000 less than the actual number counted out in the field.

The management centre is part of the Social Services Ministry and compiles its figures from reports filed by officials in affected areas. The Public Security Ministry compiles its figures from police reports on the number of bodies recovered, identified, examined and buried.

For some reason, the two government agencies are still trying to sought out the discrepancy. Gosh, it sounds like this is the most gravest problem we are facing right now. As a matter of fact, I think the guys who do the hard work would probably end up giving the correct result, but then again the guys in chairs would want to have their signatures on the papers too. So why skip the fuss?

Talking about the real victims, the death toll in Sri Lanka is expected to exceed 40,000, and Indonesia doesn't seem to show any signs of slowing down its rate, not any time sooner. So, there is a possibility that the number could reach the third phase of six figures. We all know pretty much how badly a tsunami could kill a person, well, many to be precise. But it's so painful to find someone caught up to it, months after he had died. That's just not right.
