I still love the sea

The ocean is a friend of every Sri Lankan. We are wildly attracted by it. That's the case of being an islander I guess. But what happens when such an admirable friend turns against you? Are we irate? Kodiyatu Sunimal, a survivor of the tsunami disaster made it quite clear.
I have always lived by the sea. It was our friend and provider. But now it frightens me. Earlier, the sound of the waves were like music to my ears. Now I have nightmares of waves crashing into my home and taking us away. I never knew the sea could be so destructive.
But despite everything, I still love the sea. I am an islander - I can never run too far away from the ocean.
This Photo Jounal takes us through the story of how the tsunami destroyed Sunimal's neighbourhood and deserted him from his life long home. It gives a reasonable picture of a typical southern family who were lucky enough to survive the disaster.

It's wierd that the sea ended up doing the damage while it was the earth that started it. I love the sea too, just wish it couldn't get that violent.
I think there should be know one to blame. It's all nature. We all move and are affected by the force of nature. It is a fact though, that the transition from this life to the other always turns out to be painful and violent. We hope to have a better understanding of that in the future.
The earth is like us in that it needs to strech sometimes to release tension. We just need to be ready to avoid life-threating whenever the earth needs some more room to breathe.
My prayers are with you and your family. I know it seems like the sea is your enemy but calmer days are ahead. Keep the faith, stay strong and you will survive. E- mail me if you need an ear to listen
