A Silent New Year

Sri Lanka Mourns
I took a walk outside on an evening so special to the entire world. I was trying to find anything that conveyed the meaning of 'special', and so I became a spectator for empty streets, white flags on doors, lighting candles, prayer recitals and pleadings for mercy. Yes, those were special. But they might not have been the speciality that we all expected. I bear witness to a national grievance, on a day that would have been filled with joy.

Where are the fireworks? Music? Dancing? Celebration? I see them on distant lands, but I cannot find them here. They were stolen from us when the lives of our families were taken. And now we are holding flags of misery, each one for another.

It's a New Year's Eve that I have never experienced in my life. I'm wondering whether it's really the day that I think it is. In a short while from now I'll be taking off my calendar, but I'm not sure whether I would put the next. It's as if our future has been erased and we feel nothing but distress.

As the saying goes, everything happens for a reason. And I believe that it was the call for unity that brought this to us. Today we have found it, as millions of us stand together as one, grieving at the loss of our fellow citizens and neighbors. We have broken the chains of hostility, we have awakened from a long sleep and we have begun to feel the need of amity. All these years we celebrated the New Year to repeat the same old story over and over again. But with no celebration what so ever, the dawn of this New Year will bring hope to our country that will change us in a way far more than we could think of. A change that we have been yearning for all along.

These sacrifices were made not to be forgotten or wasted. We shall learn our lessons and make them count. It's our hope for the next and coming years.

May you all have a peaceful and prosperous New Year!

our prayers are with you and may there come a time when all mankind can be one, where love and concern for all our brothers and sisters will cover the earth. I can only feel pain as I try to understand your sorrow. This loss of life can perhaps change us to appriciate the time we have on earth, not to waste time in things that does not bring lasting happiness. Things do not make us happy. Those we love do, esp. our families!
